Notes from a Democracy

“Research”: To go around again

Our last blogging session together! :: sniff ::

Here’s the prompt … Look at page 2 of your syllabus, which includes our course objectives and also the notes you wrote on those objectives back in January.

Possible questions … feel free to answer one, some, or all:  How has your perspective on these objectives changed since January?  Which objective(s) now seems most meaningful to you?  Which objective(s) do you think you’ll continue working on?  Which ones do you understand better than you did in January?

I think that the objective that states “Incorporate evidence effectively into your writing, with attention to audience, genre, ethical and stylistic considerations, and accurate citation” is very important. I better understand this objective now than in January.

Looking back at what I had written back in the day :) and I’m re-reading what I had written and it doesn’t make much sense. Now loking at the course objectives I can identify in some way how that objective was carried out and in the beginning I don’t think I really understood what I was talking about. I was just writting I suppose… however here’s my responses:

—Write up research in styles appropriate for vaious genres/contexts, including academic and journalistic…

JANUARY: “Seems fun especialy the journal”
MAY: HA! Fun is quite not the word…

—Analyze evidence by means of appropriate methods, such as textual analysis, coding or thematic grouping…

JANUARY: “Sounds like a Dr. Price objective… very thorough”
MAY: Oh how right I was… same opinion on this one… only too bad I didn’t know how thorough lol

This objective was the most meaningful to me though beacuse I was able to grow as a student especially a qualitative researcher and understand the analysis of writing much more

“Which objective(s) now seems most meaningful to you? ”
For me the most important objective to me for this class was to “Develop and articulate a considered stance (thesis) stemming from your research question.”
I’ve taken the entire semester to re-formulate my research question and thesis and still recieve comments that it’s not clear, too wordy, or makes no sense…which is difficult for me cause the more i adjust the question the less i like it.
To me this objective is a never ending goal because there is always a way to edit redo or change an idea.

Upon rereading my thoughts on course objectives, I find that my opinions from January have pretty much stayed the same. I guess this is because I’m an english major and am use to doing research. However, looking back the one I find most meaningful is the one where it states to gather and evaluate appropriate evidence through various methods, including textual research, interviews, and observation. I wish I would have allowed myself more time to thoroughly conduct the amount of research necessary to further develop my argument. Since I only used brief questionaires, I was not able to delve into my topic to the extent that I would have liked to.

One objective that I had thought was tedious and almost not needed int eh beginning was the objective discussing the write up of research. I did not understand that importance in the beginning. Now I realize that it has been the write ups that have helped me to write my paper. I have taken wholeparagraphs from my research write up and put in it my paper. I wish I would have learned that earlier

The objective that states Analyze evidence by means of appropriate methods, such as textual analysis, coding, or thematic grouping means the most to me because I feel like I focused on coding and analysis the most in my research. I feel like analyzing text accurately is something that I improved greatly this semester.

OBJECTIVE:Gather and evaluate appropriate evidence through various methods, including textual research, interviews, and observation.

(This semester I learned the importance of this objective, given my unique experience with the IRB what consisted of relevant research for my topic has conitinued to change, initially i was unwilling to change my previously researched articles but as my research became mor important to me, and displaying my topic clearly became a big priority I was greatly motivated to find sources of information that lended significantly to my research.)

OBJECTIVE:Identify an issue that you perceive to be important and under-explored. Shape your thoughts on this issue into a clear, focused research question.

(This objective has become extremely important to me, i still feel that this research project has limited all that I want to explore on my topic, and so this is one objective I would like to carry out further during my time at Spelman in hopes of creating a body of information on an obscure area of research.)

All of the other objective that I found to be importan are still important. All of them are essential to the research process

The objective most meaningful to me was the “write up research in styles appropriate…” just as I thought before, the write up has helped me learn about how to write abtract. I also find that learning how to “analyze evidence” has helped me get a glimpse into my participants heads…though I was not sure thatr my instruments were effective in gathering the information I wanted.
I understand the “identify auidences, genres, and publications” objective better. In January, I was a bit hestiant because it seemed like a lot of work…something too challegening for me to complete; but this was actually the easiest of all objectivies.
Forumlating my stance was hard….very hard I knew what I wanted to find out and I knew why, but I was not certain where I stood or how I would find out where I stood which was a bit dishearting. It took me hours and hours of writing (paragraph after paragraph) before actually reached a clear understanding of what I wanted to say.

I am more open to doing these objectives. In January I was scared that it might have been too much to handle, but now I see that it is really not that difficult. The objective that is the most meaningful to me is attempting to identify an issues that I perceive to be important and under-explored. This is an objective I will definately continue to work on.

My perspective has changed somewhat on the course objectives since January. At the beginning of the semester I wasn’t quite sure what all this class entailed. the objective that has changed the most for me was: Analyze evidence by means of appropriate methods, such as textual analysis, coding, or thematic grouping. I did not know what coding was so now that I have learned about it, I have a better understanding. The objective that is the most meaningful to me is: Incorporate evidence effectively into your writing, with attention to audience, genre, ethical and stylistic considerations, and accurate citation. This is important because in order to make your research flow and have it be understandable for the audience, everything needs to properly fit. The objective I will keep working on will be: Write up research in styles appropriate for various genres/contexts, including academic and journalistic. I feel that this is the most imortant because with out relating your research to your audience, there is no way that you can gain support for your argument. I definately understand the objective that deals with coding better.

As of now the objective that seems the most important to me is the first one, “identify an issue that you perceive to be important and under-explored,” which has for some time now been something meaningful to me. As a history major here at Spelman, I have always found myself exploring the lesser-known histories and revising the well-known ones, aligning myself with the perspectives of other revisionist historians. So the parts that are often overlooked, neglected and ignored are of prime interest to me. Even in this class, I found myself researching something not well-explored, which is how the media affects women’s self-perception of themselves politically. While there is a lot available on the media affecting women’s views of themselves in terms of body image and self-esteem, I have found none on their views outside of this. As a result, this question will still remain as something that I would want to explore even after this project is completed, just because I think it needs more attention being paid to it.

The objective which seems most important to me know is , Analyze evidence by means of appropriate methods, such as textual analysis, coding, or thematic grouping. I never really realized before how much analyzing data effects the overall writing document. I mean I knew that materials had to be read and understand, but from the different methods we learned in class such as coding and creating categories to organize material, I now understand how much easier it is to actually do the work.
